Publication: Facilitating Intr-African Trade: AfCTA Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights
Stakeholders and African leaders have joined forces to harness Africa’s potential in the global digital arena and to emphasize the critical role of intellectual property rights (“IP Rights”) in facilitating intra-Africa trade and economic development. The African Continental Free Trade Area (“AfCFTA”) remains a pivotal initiative to unify Africa’s economy as a single market. The African Union has extended its efforts beyond AfCFTA by adopting the Protocol to the Agreement Establishing the AfCFTA on IP Rights (“the Protocol”).
In this article, our Associates, Favour Ogini and Lilian Ezekwu examine the economic prospects and the enforcement of the Protocol vis-à-vis the objectives of the AfCFTA which seek to establish harmonized rules and principles for the promotion and protection of IP Rights in Africa.
